When Was It Started?

Getty Images is a sister company to another well-established stock photography company, iStock. The company Getty Innovations LLC, was founded in 1995 by Jonathan Klein and Mark Getty. It was later renamed Getty Images.

Getty is currently headquartered in Seattle, WA, USA. The publicly held entity is listed on the New York stock exchange as GETY.

What is Getty Images All About?

Getty Images Holding Inc, is a global marketplace for visual and digital content. The company stands out as one of the longest-standing, most prestigious, and most significant names in the stock photography industry. Getty Images was created with the sole purpose of collecting high-quality images and redistributing them across the world.

It was one of the first companies to license imagery via the internet, ushering the photography industry into the online market. Today, millions of photographers and videographers are selling their creative works on the platform.

Some top-rated Getty Image photographers receive exclusive access to some of the world’s most prestigious events, such as the Olympics, concerts, red-carpet events, and much more.

How Can You Become a Getty Images Contributor?

Registering as a contributor with this website is absolutely free of charge, but you must be at least 18 years old. All you have to do is follow the application process as explained on their FAQ Page

Since Getty Images and iStock are sister companies, you can submit your contributor application via either Gettyimages.com or iStock.com. The company has also specified that they only accept applications for videos, images, and illustrations through the respective apps.

First, download the Getty Images app, create an account, submit your work, wait for the company’s editor’s to check the quality of your content, and if approved, you become a contributor.

Membership/ Subscription Plans:

Generally speaking, there are two categories of Getty Images contributors: exclusive and non-exclusive.

  1. Non-Exclusive Contributors

On the one hand, non-exclusive contributors are free to sell their work or both iStock and Getty (registering with one allows you to sell on the other as well).

As a non-exclusive contributor, you can also sell the same content to other stock photography sites or companies. However, this freedom comes at a cost because non-exclusive contributors get slightly lower royalties and sell their images for less compared to their exclusive counterparts.

In other words, non-exclusive contributors retain all their rights to sell their videos, photos, and illustrations elsewhere.

  1. Exclusive Contributors

On the other hand, users with exclusive Getty Image contracts benefit from premium rates, at least $50 for every upload. So, if you want to make more money using this platform, then this would be your membership plan.

However, it would be best if you understood that an exclusive contract would require you to give up your licensing rights  to the content uploaded on the website. Simply put, you cannot sell the same content to other stock photography sites, once it’s uploaded on gettyimages.com or iStock.com.

How Much Money Can You Make as A Getty Images Contributor?

Several factors will influence your earnings, as a contributor to this stock image website. Among these factors include the type of membership plan you choose, the quality of your images, how many images you have uploaded on the website, your approval rate, and so forth.

According to contributors already using the website, your Getty Image content can be worth between $300 and $500. The company will then pay you 15-30% of your content’s value per month.

Since value varies based on the frequency of uploads and the license type you subscribe to, there is no telling how much a single image can sell for. To make a substantial living off this site, you must ensure that all odds are in your favor.

Getty pays via either check or PayPal. Checks work best for US residents. And if you are a non-US citizen, PayPal is the best option.
